Recent events:

DJL hosted a research workshop for all PhD students, visiting students, and researchers associated with the lab to learn about and discuss different lines of inquiry in the lab.

DJL hosted a research seminar by Karen McEwen on data practices in workplace wellness programmes on the 16th of October, 2019.

The DATAJUSTICE project hosted a workshop on the role of data in the governance of refugees with activists, migrant solidarity groups and scholars in Madrid on July 6th, 2019.

DJL co-organised an IAMCR pre-conference on Media Justice in the Digital Age in Madrid on July 6th, 2019.

DJL hosted a workshop on civic participation in data-driven governance on June 7th as part of the project Toward Democratic Auditing, which brought together key experts and stakeholders from the UK and internationally.

DJL co-organised a pre-conference for ICA on ‘Justice and Order in the Datafied Society’ which brought together critical legal scholars and communication scholars in Washington, DC on May 24, 2019.

DJL welcomed Stanford University’s Digital Civil Society Lab on 16 May, 2019 for a workshop with civil society groups based in and around Wales to discuss the intersection between digital policy and community action.

We presented our project findings from Data Scores as Governance on Monday 19th of November at Central Hall Westminster from 1-5pm.

DJL hosted the UN Special Rapporteur for extreme poverty and human rights, Professor Philip Alston, on November 6th, 2018 for a workshop on digital welfare as part of his investigation into poverty in the UK.

DJL co-hosted the seminar and workshop ‘Beyond data ethics: datafication and the good life’ together with Copenhagen University’s Centre for Communication and Computing on the 5th of September in Copenhagen, Denmark.

DJL organised a panel on ‘Data and Social Justice’ at the International Communication Association conference in Prague 24-28 May as part of the new interest group ‘Activism, Communication and Social Justice‘ (ACSJ).

DJL organised a research seminar with Nick Couldry on 16 May 2018 to discuss his work on data colonialism.

Six Provocations for Data Protection – Session at the Computers, Privacy and Data Protection Conference, 24 January 2018, organised by our friends from the Global Data Justice project at Tilburg University and the Datactive project at University of Amsterdam.

Datafication and Social Justice – Roundtable at the Internet Governance Forum in Geneva, 21 December.

DJL organised Research Seminars with Richard Heeks (6 December) and Anna Feigenbaum (29 November).

Workshops on Data Justice at the European Ideas Lab in Dublin (28 October) and The Glass Room in London (5 November).

Investigating (with) Big Data, 1-day symposium at Cardiff University, 24 May, co-organised with the Data Justice Lab.

Social Justice in an Age of Datafication, 17 March 2017, Cardiff University. This public event featured international speakers, including Virginia Eubanks (New America), Malavika Jayaram (Digital Asia Hub) and Steven Renderos (Center for Media Justice). It served as the official launch of the Data Justice Lab.
